It is your site now.

I built this site with grand intentions. Unfortunately, like a little kid who puts more cake on his plate than he can possibly eat, I have taken on more than I can manage.

Since all the functionality is here, the only real thing missing is a few boat builders who are looking for a place to record their project and share their research.

With that in mind, I'll leave the site running. If you have any questions or requests, please feel free to email me at joe@boatbloggers.com.

How to share your photos in online forums.

Grab Handles

Fitting Out
Recent discussion on the CLCBoats.com forum reminded me that I still have to install grab handles on my kayaks. For the Mill Creek I'll use the traditional looking padeyes. For Michael's Chesapeake I'm undecided so I've started researching the options. Here's what I've found so far.

Forum wisdom seems to think that a loop of rope through the hull is not comfortable for long or heavy hauls and may cause injury if the boat spins or rolls in the surf. Read the discussion

Wooden foot braces

Fitting Out
I haven't installed foot braces in either of our boats yet. I didn't want to put holes through the deck and hadn't gotten around to following Kurt Mauer's plans. Now I am kind of glad I didn't. I'm pretty settled on using Nick Schade's approach as described in his book "The Strip-Built Sea Kayak" and plan to buy the kit from shearwater-boats.com.

Fast and Fabulous - Varnishing Techniques

Articles | Painting and Varnishing
I'm getting ready to varnish my Mill Creek 15, now named "Manteo" after my family vacation spot. I didn't have too much trouble with varnishing Michael's boat (now named OB, after a horse he learned how to ride on) but thought a little research wouldn't hurt.

This article, meant for owners of large motor craft, has some good tips and describes the process in detail.

The Case For Lofting

Lofting | Articles
If you want to build a boat from plans (as opposed to buying a kit), you will need to learn how to loft. This article by Dudley Dix Yacht Design is a great introduction to the process.
